What you can do after purchasing it
 You can modify their backgrounds, origin, gender, colour palette, race, etc to your own liking, even for closed species. 
Yes, you are free to modify anything about them after purchase. They belong to you.
The descriptions for each adoptable is just my headcanon.
Keywords
Starting Bid (SB): The starting and the lowest bid you can make.
Autobuy (AB): Automatically wins the auction/OTA as this is the highest price one can bid. 
Offer to Adopt (OTA): Offer what you have in order to adopt the adoptables. You can offer arts, your own adoptables, or even real money, $.
